Reseller sourcing checklist: 10 things to check before you buy.

Use this checklist at thrift stores, estate sales, flea markets, auctions, yard sales, or anywhere you source inventory. It is designed to keep a promising item from turning into a low-margin, slow-moving, or hard-to-ship mistake.

1

Identify the exact item

Confirm brand, model, size, variation, materials, included pieces, serial or style numbers, and any details that separate the item from similar versions.

2

Inspect condition closely

Look for stains, cracks, missing parts, repairs, odors, battery corrosion, wear, authenticity concerns, or other flaws that affect value or return risk.

3

Check relevant sold evidence

Use recent sold results that match the item and condition as closely as possible. Do not base the purchase on the highest active asking price.

4

Estimate realistic sale price

Choose a price you reasonably expect to receive after normal offers or discounts, not an optimistic top-dollar scenario.

5

Add selling and promotion fees

Estimate marketplace fees, payment costs, promoted-listing costs, or other selling expenses that apply to the channel you expect to use.

6

Estimate shipping and packing

Consider dimensional weight, oversize charges, fragile packing, boxes, supplies, and whether you will offer seller-paid shipping.

7

Account for prep and hidden costs

Include cleaning, testing, repairs, batteries, replacement parts, inbound shipping, buyer premiums, sales tax, and other acquisition costs.

8

Check storage and handling

Ask whether the item is easy to store, identify, retrieve, photograph, and ship. Bulky or fragile inventory needs more margin to justify the work.

9

Set your maximum buy price

Work backward from expected sale price and subtract fees, shipping, other costs, and the profit or margin you want to keep.

10

Decide Buy, Maybe, or Pass

Buy when the evidence supports the numbers. Use Maybe when one key fact still needs verification. Pass when the margin, demand, condition, or risk does not fit your business.

Evidence before optimism

Sold evidence, condition, and exact-item identification should drive the estimate. A high asking price alone does not prove resale value.

Shipping can erase a deal

Bulky, fragile, or unusually shaped inventory can add packing time and shipping cost that a quick comp check misses.

Uncertainty needs margin

If authenticity, completeness, testing, or demand is uncertain, lower the maximum buy price or pass until the unknown can be verified.
