Demand before purchase
Reseller Sell-Through Rate: Measure Demand Before You Buy
Sell-through gives you a way to compare sales with available stock. Define the period and the inventory you are counting before using the number to guide a sourcing decision.
Calculate your own inventory sell-through
For a chosen period and a consistent group of items, one practical measure is units sold during the period divided by units available to sell during that period. Define what counts as available stock and apply that definition consistently.
For example, if 18 units sold and 42 comparable units remained available, 18 ÷ (18 + 42) = 30%. This describes that group's observed movement under the stated assumptions; it is not a promise that the next item will sell at the same rate.
Use comparable listings as a demand proxy
When sourcing an item you have not sold before, compare recent sold results with relevant active listings for the same brand, model, size, condition, and marketplace. The ratio can help you judge demand relative to competition, but search results are an imperfect snapshot, not a verified measure of every seller's inventory.
Check the dates of sales, number of close matches, pricing differences, and whether one unusual sale dominates the sample. A small sample, seasonal category, or incomplete search can make the proxy misleading.
Pair demand with a maximum buy price
A fast moving item can still be a bad purchase if fees, shipping, repairs, and the actual acquisition cost erase the margin. A slow mover may work if the buy price is low, the item stores easily, and your cash is not needed elsewhere.
Start with a conservative sale price and subtract expected costs and target profit to set a ceiling. Then ask whether the likely time to sell and the number of competing listings justify tying up that money and space.
Review your own results
Track acquisition and listing dates, sales, remaining quantity, and realized profit for comparable products. Review performance by category and price band rather than treating your whole inventory as one uniform market.
Use the result to adjust future buying decisions and revisit older stock. A single rate cannot explain weak photos, inaccurate item details, high pricing, or a poor marketplace fit.
